Things Learned from Sensory Interaction Community

By creating this website on Ning I learned a lot about community engagement and human interaction.  I learned that, though small there is a community out there of people who are disabled and use technological tools to help them live life more independently.  For example T.V. Raman is a Google pioneer in customizing technology to blind users.  He himself is blind so he is motivated to create tools that might help others who are blind as well.  I also learned that my members bring interesting topics to hand as well as new technology that they come across to help the process.  Hopefully we come up with enough ideas to actually create a service or product that can help others in the future.

Martor Knives

A first glance i thought the knife was a bit big and wouldn't be easily stored in small places. But the idea and design is pretty cool. Martor (a company that makes cutting knives and blades) designed the Easysafe to cut towards the user and still remain safe, since the blade is tucked away behind a plastic lever on a hinge it makes cutting safer than an x-acto knife, utility knifes and box cutters. It also makes changing the blade very easy, it uses no tools. The knife is also equipped with a special key so only authorized personnel are able to change the blade. You can buy this nifty gadget here for only $14.48. video

Jack Chairs

Author Bodolec designed Jack chairs that he says come alive. His concept to is have a regular box or circular-like object that takes up no space in a room. But once sat on it blossoms like a plant, awaken and turns into a comfortable lounging chair. video

Another cool design from Authur Bodolec is his lapeyr. The lapeyer is a reinvented stairwell. The idea is to have one the stair longer than the others and attached to a wall. The stair will also be above the ground. the stair that is attached to the wall and longer than the rest will be made of a soft material so that someone can relax, sit, and enjoy the stair while not interfering with people walking up and down the stairs.

Best TV Ad Ever

The winner of the 2010 Best TV advertisement award is Nolan's Cheddar.  I thought this commercial was very cute and funny.  The cinematography and the sound design was great.  It really kept you guessing because you didn't know if the mouse was going to get caught in the trap. I loved the short film so much that I had to find the creator.  His name is John Nolan and he actually has more films that he has done.  After viewing his website I noticed he is also really into what he calls "animatronics" which are robotic like creations that he makes.  They can also move by themselves or move with someone actually moving with them.  He has a studio in London where he creates very unique works of art.  Congratulations on the Advertisement Award John!!

Exceptional Person Jesse Frankel

Jesse Frankel
Graphic Design (Graphic Design & Branding for Print + Screen)

What I Do? I strive to create innovative designs that engage the audience in the striking amplification of decor and clarity. Where as graphic design is both and neither art and commerce, it is my responsibility to accentuate the fine line that lie between.  I have and will continue to practice within many forms of design media, though I find that I am at my best developing and enhancing brands through the origination of idea and form intended for print and inevitably existent on the web.

How I got to do what I do? I have reached my professional and creative apex through years of mentorship, visual osmosis, and cultural exploration, with the recent addition of a bachelors of fine arts degree from CalArts. My path has been somewhat unconventional though fulfilling nonetheless. In my many travels through the cosmos of design time and space, one thing that I have learned is that there is no end to education as a designer. It is a lifelong journey of trial, error, discovery, faith, and adventure.

Tips:To become a truly good designer you must dedicate as much of your senses as possible. See the world through the designer's eye. Eat with the palette of a designer, drink the designer's kool-aid. Allow yourself the gratification that everything that can be done has already been done, but take this fact with a grain of designer's salt and do what you can to reinvent new wheels with the utmost importance. Designers are problem solvers with a paint brush, and the world is constantly fading is the bright light of commercial banality. We are anti heroes ever burdoned with the selfless mission of functional beautification. So aim high, get dirty, and never apologize for anything except for the use of comic sans.

GPS Device for the Blind

Drop_4_2 natkaniec madsen Allan Sejer Madsen and Lukasz Natkaniec from Poland, have developed a GPS device for the blind called "DROP" GPS system.  The device is in a shape of a disk and senses it location using GPS Technology.  The grid is made of 3D moveable dots so the user can feel the maps, very similar to braille. It also has a zoom, search, and voice command feature as well.

I think this device is pretty cool and in the future can help the blind get around without a see ans eye dog or a walking stick. What do you think?

Using infrared light to help deaf people hear and blind people see

Richard Rabbitt has discovered a different way to activate cells using infrared light to send signals to the brain.  Rabbitt figured out how to use infrared light to send signals to the brain.  Pulses of invisible wavelengths are activate nearby cells and communicate with the brain. "In the lab, researchers were able to make heart cells in rats beat again and make inner-ear cells of toadfish send signals the brain."

Rasearchers hope this type of therapy work in the following situations
  • to restore balance as well as age
  • to provide artificial vision in patients with retinitis pigmentosa
  • to treat people with Parkinson's disease

Rabbitt said in a statement:
“A healthy adult can hear more than 3,000 different frequencies. With optical stimulation, there’s a possibility of hearing hundreds or thousands of frequencies instead of eight. Perhaps someday an optical cochlear implant will allow deaf people to once again enjoy music and hear all the nuances in sound that a hearing person would enjoy.”

I'm interested to see how these implants will improve in the future.

Uchicago Hookups

A few University of Chicago students have created a casual sex site called UChicago Hookups.  The purpose of the site is to allow UChicago students, find casual encounters and entertainment events.  The site says “Chastity is curable if detected early” and features a Victor Lownes quote: “A promiscuous person is a person who is getting more sex than you are.”   More than 200 people have already signed up for the service and  are looking for a "no srings attached" sexual experience. "We’re trying to change the ages-old stereotype that UChicago students are severely sexually deprived,” the site’s creator writes on the site.

But is this taking that stereotype too far in a different direction. In my opinion sex is turning into a everyday thing now.  It is supposed to be cherished and shared with a person you love.  Young adults now are treating it like some sort of casual thing you do with your friends.  And the media is only making the situation worst with movies coming out like "No Strings Attached" and "Friends with Benefits" (pretty much the same as "No strings Attached" with different actors). Or shows on MTV like Skins, which shows very sexually active teens. Also teen celebs are having babies.  And we wonder why our teens are geting pregnant at such a young age.  Is society now telling them it's Ok?  That at that age, they are supposed to be having sex and if you get pregnant, oops, O well.

Painting in Water

I came across this blog entry while surfing smashingmagazine.com.  The entry is about Suminagashi, which is the art of painting on water.  I watched two videos on how its done and I was amazed.  There are a few techniques but they all come out elegantly beautiful.  The technique requires a knowledge of fluid dynamics and of course basic artistic ability.  The technique originated in China over 2,000 years ago, but was practiced by Shinto priests in Japan starting in the 12th century.  The basic technique is still mainly the same with some variations because of modern tools.  To do this kind of art you have to know what your doing before it's done.  Kind of like working backwards.  To make steams of a flower the artists in these videos start off with circles and manipulate them to create the form they are trying to achieve.  When the process is finished a paper is placed on the surface to pick up the ink that is floating on top of the water.  A very cool process.

A day made of glass...

I love it!! I would want to live in a world like this. The issue is I was thinking about someone throwing rocks and breaking everything. I could see someone destroying it. either on purpose or accident. It looks so fragile. The only part i didn't like about the video was the husband reading in bed. It looked so flimsy. I wouldn't be able to read something in bed so flimsy. It would be annoying. On the other hand i did like how the technology was brought outside the home as well in.  It was in the car, and on the street.  It was a great vision on the future. Thanks Corning!

Inspiring typographic artwork

This semester I've have leaned a lot about typography so seeing this artwork has inspired me to maybe try and create some typographic artwork.
